A bilingual survey reached people who are not bilingual
English and Korean proficiency by group
Only 36% of the Korean respondents rate their English as fluent or native, and six of them put down basic or none. That matters for how you read the rest of this report: this is not just the English-speaking slice of Korean developers answering. Going the other way, 48% of international residents have conversational Korean or better, against 11% of those still abroad.

The visa ladder is real, and it takes about five years
Residency status by years lived in Korea
In their first year, 3% of international residents hold a long-term or permanent status and 34% are on a work, study or job-seeking visa. By four to six years that flips to 57% settled, and by seven to nine years 86% hold F-2, F-5 or F-6 with only 5% still sponsored.
